Oumou Sangaré, Moussolou, 1990
Oumou Sangaré is considered an ambassador of Wassoulou music, which is sung mostly by women and popularised in the West African Wassoulou region, covering sections of Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire and Oumou's birthplace Mali. Reoccurring themes within the genre deal with fertility, childbearing and polygamy, and therefore need a strong vocalist to deliver. Oumou being just that. Often referred to as "The Songbird of Wassoulou", Oumou soars in places whilst offering enough constraint to still come across empathic and passionate, its for this reason she will appear here time and time again.
