Conroy Smith, Dangerous, 1988

Dedicating this one to DJ Derek, on what would have been his 76th birthday. A true Bristol legend, held in high regard by many reggae contemporaries the world over and St Pauls locals alike, DJ Derek's Sweet Memory Sounds will live on forever. I can remember Derek selecting Conroy Smith 'Dangerous' as his set opener on more than one occasion, the tracks classic Jamaican dancehall stylings juxtaposed with Derek wearing a cardigan and specs sent the crowd mad every time. There are plenty of reports on the case of Derek's disappearance and death in the press but here I want to focus on his 50 year run in the music scene, and what he did in that time for cultural relations - Daddy G of Massive Attack sights him as " an ambassador for cultural exchange". Thoughts are with his family on his birthday, RIP Derek Serpell-Morris.
